How to File Income Tax Return (ITR) Online: Step-by-Step Guide for FY 2025-26
Why Filing Your ITR is Important
Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is not just a legal obligation — it's a critical financial document that serves as proof of income for visa applications, loan approvals, credit card applications, and even rental agreements. In India, every individual whose total income exceeds the basic exemption limit (₹2.5 lakh under old regime, ₹3 lakh under new regime for FY 2025-26) is required to file an ITR.
Even if your income is below the taxable limit, filing an ITR is beneficial if you have TDS deducted, want to claim a refund, have foreign assets, or need income proof for financial applications. This guide walks you through the complete process — from gathering documents to submitting your verified return.
Which ITR Form Should You File?
Choosing the right ITR form is the first critical step. The Income Tax Department has 7 ITR forms (ITR-1 to ITR-7), but most individuals will use ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, or ITR-4.
| ITR Form | Who Can Use | Who Cannot |
|---|---|---|
| ITR-1 (Sahaj) | Salaried individuals, income from one house property, interest income, family pension. Income ≤ ₹50 lakh. | Income > ₹50L, capital gains, business income, foreign assets, two+ house properties, agricultural income > ₹5,000. |
| ITR-2 | Individuals with capital gains, multiple house properties, foreign assets, income > ₹50L, or unlisted shares. No business income. | Business or professional income, presumptive income, F&O trading. |
| ITR-3 | Business owners, professionals, freelancers, F&O traders, partners in firms, directors of companies. | None — this is the most comprehensive form. |
| ITR-4 (Sugam) | Businesses under presumptive taxation (Section 44AD/44ADA), with turnover ≤ ₹2 crore and presumptive profit declared. | Capital gains, more than one house property, F&O trading, director of a company. |

Step-by-Step Process to File ITR Online
Step 1: Log in to the Income Tax Portal
Visit www.incometax.gov.in. Click on 'Login' and enter your PAN (username) and password. If you don't have an account, click 'Register' and create one using your PAN, Aadhaar, and mobile number. Complete the registration with OTP verification.
Step 2: Choose 'File Income Tax Return'
Once logged in, go to the 'e-File' menu and select 'Income Tax Return.' Select the relevant Assessment Year (for FY 2025-26, the AY is 2026-27).
Step 3: Select the Correct ITR Form
Choose the applicable ITR form (ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, or ITR-4) based on your income sources and category. The portal may suggest the appropriate form based on your profile.
Step 4: Choose Filing Mode
You have two options:
- Online Mode: Fill the form directly on the portal. This is recommended for most taxpayers as it has built-in validations, pre-filling from Form 26AS, and automatic tax calculation.
- Offline Mode: Download the JSON utility, fill it offline, and upload it back. Useful for complex returns with multiple schedules.
Step 5: Fill in Your Details
In the online mode, you need to complete these sections:
A. Personal Information: Name, PAN, Aadhaar, date of birth, address, email, mobile, and filing status (resident/ NRI).
B. Income Details: This is the most important section:
- Salary Income: Enter salary details from Form 16. The portal can auto-fill from your employer's data in many cases.
- House Property: Add rental income or declare "Nil" for self-occupied property. Claim interest deduction under Section 24(b).
- Capital Gains: Enter short-term and long-term capital gains from shares, mutual funds, and property. You'll need to fill Schedule CG with transaction details.
- Business/Professional Income: Enter your P&L details, turnover, and expenses.
- Other Sources: Interest income (savings account, FD), dividend income, family pension, etc.
C. Deductions (Chapter VI-A): Enter all eligible deductions:
- Section 80C: Up to ₹1.5 lakh (PPF, ELSS, EPF, life insurance, etc.)
- Section 80CCD(1B): Additional ₹50,000 for NPS
- Section 80D: Health insurance premium (up to ₹25,000 for self/family, ₹50,000 for senior citizens)
- Section 80E: Education loan interest (no upper limit)
- Section 80G: Donations to charitable institutions
- Section 80TTA/80TTB: Savings account interest deduction (₹10,000/₹50,000 for senior citizens)
D. Tax Paid and TDS: The portal auto-populates your TDS details from Form 26AS. Verify all entries. Enter advance tax and self-assessment tax payments (if any).
E. Tax Calculation: The portal automatically computes your total tax liability. Check if it matches your own calculation. If there's a tax payable, the portal will generate a challan (ITNS 280) for payment. If there's a refund, it will show the refund amount.
Step 6: Verify and Submit
Review all the information carefully. Once satisfied, click 'Preview and Submit.' You will see a summary of your return. Click 'I agree' and then 'Proceed to Verification.'
Verification Methods (How to Complete Your Filing)
Filing without verification is incomplete. You must verify your return within 30 days of filing. Choose one of these methods:
